The discharge can occur within the cloud, between the cloud and the ground, or between different clouds. The lightning bolt is the visible manifestation of the electrical discharge, and it can release energy of up to one billion volts and temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit).
